Updating raid drivers

Prior to Driver Matic, all drivers had to be installed differently and required significant user involvement.My thought were, since it's installed on the SD cards that I could get another T420 (which I have) that has the same controller, install VMWARE on that system then put them in the production box, rescan the adapters for storage and then import my VM's. A couple questions I have are..that possible or is there a way to update the drivers in the original system without issues?
